The quantity of treatment visits necessary for root canal therapy (RCT) has been a topic of intense discussion ever since endodontics became a recognized profession. In a single treatment session, cleaning, shaping, and obturation are done in a single-visit RCT. As an alternative, a short-term medication, like calcium hydroxide, is used during the interval between the cleaning and shaping appointment and the obturation appointment as part of the multiple-visit treatment. While many practitioners use outcome data to support their treatment choices, studies comparing single- and multiple-visit RCTs have consistently shown comparable effects for both types of treatments.
